Car pulls to one side: causes and malfunctions

A car that pulls to one side while you're driving is more than just a minor inconvenience; it's a potential indicator of underlying problems that can affect your safety and driving experience. No matter if it's misaligned wheels, uneven tyre pressure or problems with the braking system, persistent pulling can affect your ability to keep control of the vehicle and react effectively to changing road conditions. Here we’ll take a look at why cars pull to the right or the left, or when braking, and what you can do to fix the issue.

Why does my car pull to one side?

Your car constantly pulling to one side, or when you let go of the steering wheel, could be caused and remedied by the following:

  • Misaligned wheels. Misalignment occurs when the wheel angles deviate from the vehicle's recommended specifications. This can lead to uneven tyre wear and cause the car to pull to one side. The wheels must be properly aligned – this usually involves visiting a qualified mechanic or garage with a wheel alignment machine. Also, make sure that all of the car wheel studs are properly fastened.

Why does my car pull to one side?

  • Uneven tyre pressure. Differences in tyre pressure between the tyres on the two sides of the car can cause the car to pull in the direction of the side with the lower tyre pressure. This imbalance affects the handling and stability of the car. Make sure that all tyres are inflated to the vehicle manufacturer's recommended pressure.

  • Uneven tyre wear. Uneven tyre wear, caused by factors such as misalignment or suspension problems, can lead to differences in traction and grip between the tyres. This can result in pulling. Have a qualified mechanic properly align the wheels to ensure they are set to the manufacturer's specifications. This adjustment helps distribute weight evenly over the tyres, minimising uneven wear and improving traction.
  • Braking system issues. Issues with the brake system, such as uneven brake pad wear or sticking brake calipers, can lead to the car pulling to one side when braking. It's important to carry out a thorough inspection and maintenance of the brake components. Start by checking the brake pads for uneven wear and if necessary, install new matching brake pads for auto. Also check the brake calipers for any signs of sticking or binding, which can cause uneven pressure distribution and pulling.
  • Suspension issues. If you notice pulling, traction, or handling problems while driving, it may be due to uneven weight distribution over the tyres. This can be caused by worn or damaged suspension components. To resolve this issue, it is recommended to replace any worn or damaged parts. Additionally, check for loose or worn suspension mounts and tighten or replace them if necessary to prevent excessive movement or instability. This will help restore proper function and ensure even weight distribution over the tyres.
  • Wear on steering components. Worn-out tie rods or rack bushings can cause play or instability in the steering system, with steering pulling to one side. Replace any worn or damaged tie rods to restore proper steering function. Also, check the rack bushings for wear or deterioration. They may also need replacing to decrease steering play.
  • Tyre quality and condition. Differences in tyre quality, tread pattern, or condition between tyres can lead to variations in traction and grip, causing the car to pull to the side with less traction. It's important to ensure uniformity and balance in tyre quality. If possible, consider investing in a full set of matching Continental tyres to eliminate inconsistencies and promote consistent handling and stability.
