EPC car warning light: what it means, how dangerous it is and how to fix it

When the EPC warning light is lit up on the dashboard, it means your ECU has detected a problem with the vehicle’s electronic power control system. It is used by popular VW Group brands, including Audi, Volkswagen, SEAT, and Skoda. The control system is responsible for managing the car’s throttle, ignition, and other engine functions.

It works in conjunction with the ECU to detect faults and monitor the behaviour of critical components. You may therefore see other lights flash up at the same time, such as the Electronic Stability Control light or “check engine” light.

EPC light comes on and off: causes and symptoms

EPC light comes on and off

In most cases, you’ll find that the light is triggered as a result of sensor malfunctions or issues with the electrical wiring or connections, causing false readings or signals. For example, if the car throttle position sensor (TPS) is corroded, damaged or incorrectly installed, it will send incorrect signals to the ECU, causing performance issues. Other sensors with a direct impact on the EPC include the engine speed, accelerator pedal, brake pressure, and steering angle sensors.

Of course, if the throttle body itself fails, the EPC system won’t be able to regulate the engine’s power. Symptoms of this often include stalling, poor acceleration or power losses, rough idling, engine surging or hesitation, and reduced fuel efficiency. This often occurs as a result of contamination, vacuum or coolant leaks, and electrical faults. In some cases, there is an issue with the power supply. Make sure to check whether your car’s battery and alternator work properly.

Is the EPC light dangerous?

Is it difficult to say how dangerous the EPC warning notification is as it can be triggered by both minor and major faults. However, if it does light up on your dashboard, it is advisable to avoid driving until it is fixed, especially if your car engine is losing power, stalling or misfiring. The ECU may eventually send the vehicle into limp mode as a response to the fault, which could worsen performance if you continue driving.

How to fix the EPC light

How to fix the EPC light

Before learning how to fix a VW EPC light, you need to stop driving the car and find out what has triggered the light. You may be able to do so by connecting the car to an OBDII scanner and reading the detected fault codes. For instance, “P0121” indicates a faulty TPS or sensor circuit.

Next, the solution may involve replacing damaged or corroded parts and cleaning dirty components. If there is a build up of contaminants around the electrical contacts of the sensors, you may be able to clean and restore them using a special car electrical contact spray. The throttle body can also become blocked with carbon deposits, needing to be removed and thoroughly cleaned.

How to fix Audi EPC light

As Audi is also a part of the VW Group, the answer remains largely the same as outlined above. However, some of the most common problems for Audis are related to the electrical system. Make sure to check the wiring carefully and try finding the root of the issue using a car diagnostic scanner. Sometimes, the solution is as simple as replacing a car fuse.
