What is a keyless entry system?
A keyless entry car system eliminates the need to manually open and lock car doors using the key or key fob. Instead, the driver only has to keep the fob or keychain on their person, such as in their bag or pocket, and the car’s central locking system will either automatically unlock the doors as they approach the car or when they press a button on the fob.
This saves time as you no longer need to frantically rummage around your bag or worry about your key getting jammed in the door in freezing temperatures.
How does keyless entry work?
Keyless systems operate using a small key fob transmitter with a unique electronic code, antennas and sensors, and a control unit, which controls the car door lock mechanism. There are two types of keyless entry systems: remote (active) and passive (smart).
In an active or remote keyless system, the key fob sends a radio signal to the car’s receiver when the key fob button is pressed to unlock or lock the doors and activate the alarm. It’s similar to using a TV remote.
A passive system, on the other hand, allows the car to be unlocked without pressing any buttons. Instead, the car’s sensors detect the key fob’s signal when it is in close proximity to the car and automatically unlock the doors when you pull the handle.The control module verifies the signal and encryption to ensure that only the authorised key fob opens the doors.
Some aftermarket keyless entry systems allow you to use a smartphone app to control the central locking system instead of a traditional key fob. They may also include features such as vehicle tracking. The main downside here is that there can be software bugs or unauthorised access if someone steals the smartphone. Additionally, if the phone runs out of battery or you lose it, you may not be able to enter your car.
Keyless entry: protection against theft
The biggest concern surrounding keyless cars is security. Most modern car key systems include an immobiliser, which is essentially an anti-theft device that prevents the car from being started without the right key.
In a keyless system, the control unit receives the key fob’s unique identifier code via the receiver and compares it with the stored codes. If it matches, it sends a signal to the immobiliser to allow the engine to start. All the driver has to do is press the start button. If the code is not verified, the immobiliser will not deactivate or allow the engine to start.
However, it is important to note that, while keyless cars aren’t susceptible to lock picking, the software may be vulnerable to hackers. For example, they may use a specialised programme to trick the control unit into thinking that the key fob is in close proximity. Moreover, the engine won’t automatically switch off when you’re out of range so you have to remember to switch it off/keep your fob with you when you’re out and about.
While this technology has become more and more advanced, it doesn’t come with a backup if the battery in the key fob goes dead. This means that you may be left stranded if you don’t replace the battery on time.
