Find out how to spot the most common problems for the Vauxhall Adam and how to solve them in this handy guide.
Steering problems
There have been a few recalls due to the steering system not meeting requirements and the increased risk of losing steering control. In 2014, the manufacturer found that the intermediate shaft on the Vauxhall Adam could potentially break while driving, then in 2015, there was a recall because the steering rack was vulnerable to cracking.
Another recall was issued affecting cars made between October 2014 and January 2015. This time they found that the steering rack and pinion may crack under excessive force when the car is travelling at low speeds. While most of the issues will have been resolved during the recalls, it is still a good idea to find out from your local dealership whether there are outstanding recalls or weaknesses.
Engine faults
Drivers commonly experience engine performance issues, such as rough idling and starting difficulties, as a direct consequence of ECU problems. For example some Corsa and Adam models may encounter an ECU defect that stops the main relay from receiving an activation signal, preventing the engine from starting.
Fuel pump problems
A common complaint for various versions is that the Vauxhall Adam fuel pump has stopped working properly. Symptoms of a faulty fuel pump include strange whining noises coming from the fuel tank, a spluttering engine, stalling, surging, and acceleration issues.
In some cases the problem can be resolved by replacing or cleaning the unit to remove blockages, however, sometimes the cause is an electrical fault. For example, the pump relay may have gone bad. This component can be found in the Vauxhall Adam fuse box.
Petrol gauge problems
Vauxhall owners have also reported incorrect or inconsistent fuel gauge readings. For example, the gauge readings may indicate that the tank is empty when it is full. This is usually the result of a malfunctioning fuel sending unit, which is used to determine the amount of fuel left in the tank and transmit this information. Readings that fluctuate between empty or full are usually the result of a mechanical problem.
Clutch problems
Signs that your clutch may be on its way out include a clutch pedal that feels spongy, vibrates or gets stuck when you press it, difficulty shifting gears, poor acceleration although the engine is revving, and a “slipping” clutch, resulting in a brief loss of acceleration.
If your clutch slips, this usually indicates that the friction plate has worn out and is ready for a replacement. You may also notice a strange burning smell when shifting gears. Other possible causes include contamination from oil leaks, damaged clutch cables, or a faulty release bearing. You can find deals on replacement components in the Vauxhall Adam spare parts catalogue.
AC malfunction
If your air con is not working as it should be, i.e. it isn’t blowing cool air or not enough air is flowing, you may need to get a proper diagnosis. Reduced air flow is normally caused by a clogged Vauxhall Adam cabin filter or blocked air vents. If the AC air is not cold, it could be due to a number of factors, such as low refrigerant levels, a faulty compressor, or damaged control valve.
Coil pack problems
There are some reports of ignition problems caused by a failing Vauxhall Adam coil pack. This can lead to engine misfires, rough idling, hard starting, increased fuel consumption, poor acceleration, and other performance issues. It may also trigger the Check Engine warning light on the dashboard.
Without working coils, the spark plugs won’t receive enough power to ignite the air-fuel mixture at the right time. It is recommended that you get the parts replaced as soon as possible to keep your motor running properly.
