Manufacturer

Lug wrenches are designed to undo and fasten wheel bolts and nuts. They have a socket head and a handle. The longer the lever is, the less force has to be applied to loosen fasteners.

Types of lug wrenches

By design:

  • Straight. As a rule, they are made in the form of a tube or rod with sockets of different diameters and holes for attaching a tommy bar or crowbar. Single-sided tools are less common.
  • L-shaped. They can have socket heads either at one or both ends. They do not require a crowbar: the bent handle performs its function. They are not as durable as straight ones and are more suitable for home use.
  • X-shaped (or spider wrench). Can be fitted with three or four sockets. The first type has a square drive to attach a socket of the required size. Universal. They distribute the applied force uniformly, preventing the tool from slipping off and causing injuries. They don’t damage fasteners. Might have a foldable design which makes them easy to store.
  • Extendable. Feature a telescoping handle to adjust the effort. Compact, take up little space in the boot.
  • Torque. Allow you to control the tightening torque.
  • Ratchet. Have a built-in ratcheting mechanism which makes it possible to work in a confined space.

By way the socket heads are attached:

  • With non-removable sockets. Designed to work with bolts and nuts of a particular diameter.
  • With removable sockets. They are universal as they enable you to attach a socket head of any size.

Operating instructions for lug wrenches

  • Do not use tools with a diameter different from that of the fastener so as not to strip its edges. It will be impossible to remove the damaged element without special equipment.
  • If it’s necessary to undo a stuck or corroded fastener, first you need to treat it with a special penetrating lubricant. Prevent the agent from getting onto the working surface of brake discs and pads. If they get oily, braking efficiency will be dangerously reduced.
  • If the fastener still won’t move, use an extender or a tool with a longer handle. To loosen the fastener, hit the lever carefully with a hammer or push it with your foot. Avoid making careless or jerky movements. This might damage the tool and edges of the fastener, and cause injuries.
