Automotive lacquer is a colourless substance, based on liquid polymer compositions, which is used as top coat during car painting. This compound makes the body or its elements look attractive, protects them from corrosion and mechanical damages.

Types of automotive lacquers

According to type of finish, lacquers can be:

• Glossy. This coating needs regular care with polishing products.
• Matte. The surface requires no polishing.

There are single-component and dual-component products. The latter, apart from the lacquer itself, contain a hardener. According to nonvolatile components amount, there are the following classes:

Composition

As a rule, the main components of automotive lacquers are resins, for instance, acrylic or glyptal, and a solvent. Acetone, drying oil, ethanol, essential and other oils can be used as a solvent.

Usage tips on automotive lacquers

Manufacturer’s instructions should be observed in order to achieve a perfect result. First of all, you need to thoroughly clean and dry surfaces of the elements that are to be treated. And to prevent lacquer from getting onto other parts, they can be temporarily covered with a masking tape. If traces of corrosion are found on the element, it is recommended to clean it with a sandpaper. Moreover, the part must be de-oiled before lacquer application.

Ambient temperatures, at which the product can be used, are usually noted in the usage recommendations.

Using the spray can product do not forget to shake it periodically, in order to avoid paint runs. When treating a small area, the lacquer should be applied by spiral movements at a distance of 20-25 cm from the part. If the whole car body must be covered with lacquer, it is advisable to contact a service station. In this case, usage of a paint spray gun is required.

You should wait for complete drying-out after work is done. Averagely, it can take up to 2 days. This process can be speeded up by using IR-lamps.
