Faults of ignition distributor

Symptoms of ignition distributor failure

no ignition;
hindered engine start;

Causes of faulty ignition distributor

exceeding the part life;
oil or moisture ingress on the mechanism;
use of low-quality fuel;
untimely replacement of the spark plugs;
functional failure of the coil;
Incorrect order of distributor terminals attachment;
insufficient capacity of the ignition coil;
failure of the rotor arm fuse.

Diagnostics

The main indicator of the mechanism operability is its resistance. To measure resistance, connect an ohmmeter to contacts. Average resistance value between terminal G and earth is in the range of 20-31 ohms, and between the terminals A and B is 0,49-0,73 ohms. However, the exact number is necessary to look in the vehicle technical documentation.

Typically the distributor test is carried out at a planned ignition system diagnostics, which is required after 30,000 kilometers.

Repair of the ignition distributor

Repair of ignition distributor is conducted only at service stations. The fact is that the distributor sensors are very fragile, so any carelessness may cause malfunction of the entire system.

In case of mechanical damage to ignition distributor cover it is replaced. When there are defects of individual components, only defective parts can be replaced. You only need to check the compatibility, as well as to measure the resistance in the assembled distributor. If when removing the cap coal contact falls off, it is necessary to replace the spring and the coal.

Replacing the ignition distributor

Complete replacement of ignition ditributor is produced in case of serious mechanical damage, or the end of the part service life.

Disconnecting the distributor independently is difficult. To do this, remove the rotor, disconnect cables and mounting of the ignition coil and a capacitor. This type of work requires no special tools, but it takes time. In addition, it is essential to mark the order and contact pairing, because the wrong pair connection can cause failure of the entire system.
