5 tips on maintaining and replacing an engine cooling system

Most components of an engine cooling system do not have a defined service life, therefore they only need to be replaced if they stop working. The thermostat, however, does have a defined service life, which is on average around 100,000 km or 4 years.
The antifreeze should be changed in line with the manufacturer’s recommendations in order to protect the elements from premature wear. This should normally be done at least every five years, although some manufacturers recommend replacing after two years of use.
It is recommended to regularly check the level and condition of the fluid in the expansion tank. Generally, a change in texture or colour of the agent indicates that it needs replacing.
Water should not be used instead of antifreeze and different types and brands of antifreeze should not be blended. If either of these things happens then the radiator must be cleaned.
If the level of the antifreeze in the expansion tank drops suddenly, it is necessary to make sure that all couplings, fittings and hoses are air-tight.

Common problems with an engine cooling system - causes and symptoms

Mechanical damage to the radiator. This is often a result of a vehicle being involved in a collision. Antifreeze starts to leak out, which can be smelt in the passenger compartment. When the unit is being examined, liquid traces can be found.
Cracks on the expansion tank or mechanical damage to its cap. This could be caused by high pressure in the assembly due to other parts malfunctioning or by careless repair works. Signs of this problem are leakage, reduced engine power and high fuel consumption.
Cracked hoses. Cracks can be caused by very low temperatures. They can lead to leakage, which can be noticed by the smell of antifreeze in the cabin and streaks of antifreeze under the car.
The thermostat valve gets stuck. This can happen when dirt gets inside the system as a result of low-quality antifreeze. If the valve gets stuck when it is closed, there is a risk of engine overheating. If this is the case the corresponding sign on the dashboard will light up. If the valve gets stuck when it is open, then the engine takes much longer to warm up.
