The Jeep CJ5-CJ8 are successors of the vehicles popular during the Second World War, which are used for civil purposes. The cars were produced from 1954 to 1986. Until 1998, the model was marketed in Japan under the brand Mitsubishi, and until 2010 - under the brand Mahindra & Mahindra in India. In the Turkish market, the vehicles were known as Türk Willys Overland.
The history of the Jeep CJ5-CJ8 vehicles
Before the production of the CJ5-CJ8 started, between 1944 and 1953, the predecessors of the model were on sale. They were called CJ-1, CJ-2, CJ-2A, CJ-3A, CJ-4 and were manufactured under the brand Willys-Overland.
The vehicles had some features in common, in particular, a fold-flat windshield and large wheel arches. Besides, almost all cars were characterised by a rigid suspension with leaf springs both on the front and rear axles. The Jeep CJ5-CJ8 off-road vehicles were fitted with a removable soft or hard top and, as a rule, had all-wheel drive.
The CJ5 vehicles entered the production in 1954. The cars had the reputation of extremely reliable vehicles and were used in industries, agriculture and by postal services. In 1972, the vehicles underwent facelift. The manufacturer started to use a suspension with six wishbones. The fuel tank was moved from under the driver’s seat to the rear part of the car. In 1974, the equipment of the model was supplemented with a sound system, and in 1977 - with air conditioning. The production of the cars was discontinued in 1983.
The CJ-6 off-road vehicles were manufactured from 1955 to 1975. On the whole, there were about 50,000 units of the cars made, most of which were sold in Sweden and South American countries. These vehicles were also used by the United States Forest Service.
The CJ-7 cars were made from 1976 to 1986. The company has updated the suspension of the vehicle in order to improve steering response and manoeuvrability. Besides, in these cars, the Quadra-Trac four-wheel drive system was started to be used. In 1985, 195 units of the militarized version of the model were assembled for the Canadian Army.
Features of the Jeep CJ8 vehicles
These vehicles were produced between 1981 and 1986 in the pickup bodystyle and had the word “Scrambler” in their name. The cars were characterised by a long wheelbase - 2,616 mm (which is 244 mm longer than the predecessor had). The model had a trapezoidal bonnet typical of the Jeep CJ5-CJ8 vehicles, large radiator grille and round headlights. These cars also featured large wheel arches traditional for off-road vehicles.
The cars were equipped with a three-spoke steering wheel, and had an ergonomic panel with the instruments placed in the centre of it. The car seats were fitted with side bolsters. There were also special versions of the auto with a steel hardtop. There were made for the Alaska postal service.
