The Smart Roadster was produced between 2003 and 2006. The assembly was carried out in Hambach, France. On the whole, about 43,000 units were made.

The history of Smart Roadster

There was one generation, the 452. Its debut took place at the Paris Motor Show in 2002. They offered targas and roadsters. Both of them were fitted with a folding soft top, and roadsters had additional windows in the rear end. The cars were manoeuvrable and easy to use in urban conditions. They had quite compact dimensions: 3,427 mm long, 1,615 mm wide and 1,207 mm high. Their weight didn’t exceed 900 kg.

The vehicles were equipped with fuel-efficient turbocharged 0.7 l petrol engines outputting about 100 hp. The power units consumed not more than 5.1 l of fuel per 100 km in the mixed cycle, so diving this car was quite inexpensive.

The car bodies had a built-in safety shell called Tridion that minimized the risk of injuries for the driver and passenger in case of a collision. It was made of high-strength steel. The engine was in the rear end. The front axle was fitted with brake discs and the rear one – with drums.

The features of Smart Roadster (the 452)

The exterior of the model was unconventional. For instance, the colour of car body panels usually contrasted with the colour of the Tridion shell. The bonnet had sculptured sides, the dual headlamps were placed above each other in oval recesses, and the rear bumper had a large air intake. Another feature was the doors which could open almost at a right angle so that the driver and passenger could get in more easily. The interior was sporty, for example, the seats had lateral support and massive headrests.

As standard, the vehicles were equipped with ABS, Anti-Slip Regulation as well as with Dynamic Stability Control systems and auto emergency braking. The standard equipment also included front airbags, and rear ones were available as optional extras.
