Metal drills will help to make a recession, or drill a hole for installing a component during bodywork and other repair work. They have a pointed part that cuts the material due to the rotation of the chuck of the drill.

Types of metal drill bits

By the design:

  • Flat (feather-shaped). They have a shovel-shaped working surface with the blade sharpened on both sides at the end. They are insensitive to misalignment and easy to use. Particles of the material are not removed.
  • Spiral. They are made as rods with grooves on sides for removing metal cutting waste. When ordering these tools online pay attention to the direction of grooves. For example, there are left-sided components that are used for dismantling deformed fasteners. Besides, cylindrical rods with a large diameter up to 80 mm are available for sale.
  • Crowned. They are hollow cylinders with teeth made of hard alloy or with diamond coating. They make it possible to quickly make a large hole.
  • Cone-shaped. They have a rod narrowed on the one end and enlarged on the other. Using the same drill bit, it is possible to make holes of various diameters or increase the diameter of the existing ones. The tools are easily centred, and allow working with metal up to 2 mm thick. Classified into smooth, step, and spiral. They usually have marks that allow determining the exact size of the drilled hole.

For high-strength materials, the following main types of metal drill bits are made:

  1. Cobalt. Made of high speed steel alloy with cobalt. They are resistant to thermal and mechanical impact and can perforate even tough metals.
  2. Hard-face. They are made of tool steel with the use of carbide alloys. They are resistant to wear, and efficient when working with thick components.

Drilling devices have various sizes. For example, there are tools 20 or 250 mm long, with the diameter between 0.3 and 15 and more mm. Besides, the products have various shapes of the rear part (the shank). It may be cylindrical, conical, or faceted.

Tips on using metal drill bits

  1. Follow the recommendations of the manufacturer, including the optimum drill rotation speed. For example, a 3 millimeter diameter drill bit usually requires no more than 400 rpm.
  2. Do not use the tool if it is dulled. The cutting surface should be sharpened with a special tool according to the instruction. For example, for working with copper, metal drill bits are sharpened at the angle of 100°, for working with steel - at the angle of 140°.
  3. Mark the centre of the hole with a punch, securely attached the element and place the working part of the drill at the right angle to it.
  4. Do not apply excessive force to the drill. It is important for getting smooth edges.
  5. In case of prolonged use, periodically cool the tool with motor oil.
  6. Remove metal chips from the working surface in time.
