BBS wheel rims have been produced by the German company of the same name since 1972. Nowadays the company is one of the leaders in its field and specializes in the production of parts for motorsports, spare parts for original assembly of many well-known brands, and products for the after-sales service market. 1. The company, initially named BBS Automobiltechnik AG, was established in 1970 in Schiltach, Germany by the entrepreneurs Heinrich Baumgartner and Klaus Brand.
2. At the beginning the company produced plastic body parts. In 1972 its engineers developed unique multi-piece wheel rims for motorsport, marking the start of a new era in the history of the company.
3. By the 1990s the company already had branches not only in Europe, but in Japan and the USA too.
4. In 1995 Michael Schumacher, representing the Benetton Renault racing team, took first place in the Formula One World Championship. The car he drove in that race was equipped with BBS wheel rims.
5. The company currently has 500 employees.
6. The company’s range includes forged, alloy and multi-piece rims.
7. In 2019 the famous German magazine AutoBild proclaimed BBS the best manufacturer of wheel rims. Their quality and design were highly appreciated. The same year, the brand was named “Best Brand” in the rims category by another well-known magazine – Auto, Motor und Sport.

Types of BBS wheel rims:

• Performance Line. This line comprises the CC-R, CI-R, SV, CH-R, CI-R Nürburgring, CH-R II and CH-R Nürburgring models. A great deal of attention is paid to weight reduction in their production. For instance, special cavities are milled in their spokes. While flow forming technology with the use of special hydraulic rollers helps to achieve a greater density in the material structure, repeated heating and cooling increases the product’s strength. The 3D-design of the spokes gives the car a dynamic appearance, while the slimmed down central part emphasizes the sporty feel. Nürburgring model wheel rims have impressive laser engraving. They also have special protective steel plates. They are replaceable parts and protect the wheel in case of a collision, for instance on hitting a curb.
• Design Line. This includes the SX, SR and XA models. They are characterized by excellent quality, a relatively low price and practicality. For instance, SR rims with their widely-spaced spokes are ideal for use in winter, as they are easy to clean. Diamond and ceramic polishing result in a perfectly smooth surface, while the finish coating ensures reliable and long-term protection of the rim.
• Forged Line. This is the brand’s high-end line, comprising the forged models FI-R, FI, LM and Super-RS. They are manufactured using the same high-strength alloys applied in the aerospace industry. Air Inside technology, consisting of forming hollow chambers inside the wheel rim, the flow forming technique, and use of finish milling allow the product’s weight to be reduced to a minimum while still maintaining its strength.
