The BMW Z4 is a stylish two-seat vehicle which succeeded the Z3 model in 2002. The first generation of these cars was produced in the company's plant in Spartanburg, the USA; the second one was manufactured in Regensburg, Germany. In 2009, when the second generation was unveiled at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit, the design of the car was honoured with Eyes On Design Award.
The History of the BMW Z4
Over the years of the production of these vehicles, two generations and a facelift were made. The E85 Roadster of the first generation was introduced at the Paris Auto Show in 2002. In 2005, at Frankfurt Motor Show, the company unveiled the E86 model with the coupe body style. The design concept of the car was developed under the supervision of Chris Bangle, who was the BMW Head Designer at that time. In 2006, the Z4 Roadster (E85) was updated: the model gained a six-cylinder engine N52. The appearance of the car changed as well, in particular, the features of the body became sleeker and fog lights were placed deeper into the bumper grille.
In 2009, the second generation, E89 was manufactured. In the company's history, this was the first vehicle whose design was developed by women: MTD Juliane Blasi and current Tesla Motors designer Nadya Arnaout. The manufacturers updated the instrument panel, installed LED lighting into the headlights and tail lights. In 2013, the model was produced in the new colour of the body called Valencia Orange.
In August 2017, at the Pebble Beach Concours, the company unveiled G29, the concept car of the third generation.
The Features of the BMW Z4 (E89)
Soon, after its debut, the roadster of the second generation was honoured with International Design Excellence Award (IDEA) from The Industrial Designers Society of America. To introduce the car on the Russian market, the automobile association Musa Motors and the BorisHof company made a model decorated with 500 thousands of Swarovski crystals. The vehicle was officially registered in the Guinness Book of Records as a thing encrusted with the largest number of crystals. The production of the model with this body style officially ended on August 22, 2016.
The BMW Z4 cars of the second generation were manufactured with the roadster body style and were equipped with a hardtop aluminium roof with an electric drive which retracted or extended in 20 seconds. The car dimensions increased in comparison with the predecessor: the body became 148 mm longer and 9 mm wider. Besides, the vehicle gained 17’’ wheel discs and bi-xenon headlights.
The car is equipped with various safety systems. Standard safety features include ABS, emergency brake assist, cornering brake control (CBC), ESP with traction control and four airbags.
The Z4 (E89) was the company’s first car to be equipped with electric power-assisted steering. Apart from that, that was first manufacturer’s roadster fitted with the iDrive system. There are available the following optional extras: heated steering wheel, adaptive cruise control, parking sensors, Internet access, TV, voice command device and others.
