Replace a Spare part PCV valve – a defective one or if the limit of use has been already reached. Find out useful information about PCV valve
Crankcase ventilation system is designed for output of exhaust gases from engine sump volume in order to normalize its inner pressure. Main components of this system are oil separator, crankcase ventilation valve, hoses and pipes.
4 tips on crankcase ventilation system operation
- Timely replace worn components of the crankcase ventilation system. They have different lifetimes, in accordance with production material and received loads. On average, the parts may be used for 80 000 – 100 000 operational kilometers. Replacement of the components is performed by necessity.
- Perform regular cleaning of the crankcase ventilation system. It is reasonable to perform this during each oil replacement.
- During cleaning pay special attention to cavities of ventilation hoses, oil separator and holes of the system. Do not use solvents for cleaning as they may damage parts made of plastic and rubber.
- Use only high-quality oil without aggressive additives and use recommendations of your car manufacturer when selecting it.
Defects of crankcase ventilation system, their causes and signs
- Breakdown of crankcase ventilation valve. The most common cause of the defect is soiling of its parts. In this case oil level increases, which commonly leads to its leakages through sealing glands.
- Clogging or damaging of the system hoses and pipes. Their gumming-up may be caused by usage of poor-quality oil, as well as wear-out of a cylinder-piston group. In this case crankcase pressure will be increased, leading to sealing glands being pressed out of the engine and oil leaks. Damaged hoses may be also the result of excess system pressure or violation of operation rules. With this defect, air is sucked inside from the outside, which leads to power loss of the engine and interruptions in its operation. Moreover, a smell of crankcase gases, leaking through under the hood will appear.
- Clogging of oil collector. It occurs due to usage of poor-quality oil or its untimely replacement. In this case, particles of lubricating material are inflowing into a combustion chamber, causing appearance of smell of oil burning and changing of color and density of exhaust gases.
