An engine piston is one of the main functional parts of internal combustion engines. Due to reciprocating movement of the piston inside a cylinder, conversion of energy, produced at fuel burning, into mechanical work is performed. The piston also provides pressurization of a combustion chamber and withdraws heat from it.

4 tips on engine piston operation

The engine piston is a wear-resistant part, so its replacement is performed if necessary. On the average, lifetime of this part is about 250,000 operational kilometers.
Regular oil replacement allows to extend the engine pistons lifetime. Moreover, it is necessary only to use the oil recommended by the car manufacturer, and to use fuel of the proper quality.
Ingress of dust into the engine combustion chamber leads to premature wear of the engine pistons. In order to prevent this, it is necessary to replace an air filter regularly. This is particularly important when the car is used on dirt roads.
The engine overheating should be avoided, as well as its continuous operation at high rpm, because this can cause the engine piston damaging.

Defects of the engine piston, their causes and signs

Premature wear and erosion. This can be caused by insufficient lubrication or its absence, and also by excessive loads on the piston, or effect of external factors. Main signs of such defects are unstable operation of the engine and excessive consumption of motor oil.
Piston burnout or surface melting. This can happen due to usage of low-quality low-octane fuel or failure to observe the air filter maintenance schedule. Surface melting can be detected by specific knocking during engine operation.
Mechanical breakage of the engine piston. Causes may be: the component production defects, or its poor-quality installation, as well as a hydraulic shock when the cylinder is filled with water or oil, abnormality of combustion mode. In this case, the engine operates erratically, can not be started at the first attempt; knocking in the cylinder is heard; blue, blue-gray or black smoke comes from the exhaust pipe.
