The production of the Dodge Caravan multi-purpose vehicle started in 1984 and it is still going on. Canada, the USA, Chile, and China are among the countries where they are assembled. In 1985, the editorial staff of the Car and Driver magazine put this car on the list of ten best vehicles. The rebadged versions of the auto are Chrysler Voyager, Plymouth Voyager, Chrysler Town & Country. There was similar Volkswagen Routan manufactured for the North American market.
History of the Dodge Caravan vehicles
The manufacturer introduced five generations and the same number of facelifts. Between 1984 and 2007, they made vehicles with a short wheelbase. In the beginning, it was 2847 mm and since 1989 it was 2845 mm. Cars with a long wheelbase, 3025 mm, entered the production in 1987 are manufactured till present. They received the name Grand Caravan.
The vehicles of the first generation produced since 1984 could have five or seven seats. The second generation debuted in 1991. ABS became available. Besides, the manufacturer introduced an airbag for the driver. Since 1994, the cars were fitted with two front airbags.
The third generation appeared in 1995. A sliding door from the driver’s side was initially available as an option and then was installed as standard. Besides, there was a new seat management system marketed as Easy Out Roller Seats.
The fourth generation was presented in 2000. Sliding doors and an electric sunroof were available as additional extras. Moreover, new Dodge Caravan vehicles could be opened remotely with the help of a special key fob.
Vehicles of the fifth generation have been available since 2008. It was presented by cars with a long wheelbase only. Electronic stability programme was added to the range of the standard equipment.
Facelifted versions have been manufactured since early 2011. However, starting June the same year, the manufacturer stopped supplying the European market with these vehicles.
Features of the Dodge Caravan generation V cars facelift
The renewed car got more aggressive appearance. They managed to achieve such an effect, in particular, thanks to the replacement of the rectangular headlights with pentagonal halogen optical elements. The radiator grille of the facelifted Caravan multi-purpose vehicle made in the form of honeycomb instead of slats. The bumper grille lost a horizontal element painted body colour. The rear lights got smoother shapes.
All the vehicles were fitted with disc brakes and a part-time four-wheel drive. The configuration of the spacious passenger compartment could be easily changed. For example, middle row seats could rotate 180°. In order to reduce the noise level, they used additional sound insulation and acoustic windscreen.
