A rain sensor is installed at the inner side of the car windscreen and is used to activate the windscreen wipers in case of precipitation. Depending on the technical specifications of a car, the device can also trigger the closure of the sunroof and windows. The device detects the intensity of rain and immediately sends a corresponding signal to windscreen wipers activating them in an appropriate mode.

5 tips on using and replacing rain sensors

The rain sensor doesn’t have a defined service life, therefore, it only needs to be replaced when it stops working.
Rain sensors cannot be installed on some models, therefore if you are installing a rain sensor onto a car that doesn’t have it as standard equipment, it is advised to check whether it is possible with professionals from a repair shop . If the design of the vehicle allows it, professionals from the repair shop will install and connect the sensor correctly.
Install the sensor in a position that doesn’t hinder visibility. It is normally installed behind the rear-view mirror. There should be no dust or air bubbles between the sensor and the surface it is mounted on.
After installation, make sure that the rain sensor and windscreen wipers work properly.
Make sure you can always control the windscreen wipers manually in case the sensor stops working.

Common problems with rain sensors - causes and symptoms

Blown fuse. This is generally the result of moisture getting in the drive causing a short circuit in the onboard network. The sensor stops functioning and windscreen wipers do not work in an auto mode.
Torn circuit wires. This can happen as a result of a collision or excessive pressures on the sensor. Torn circuit wires cause the sensor to not respond to precipitation.
Burnt-out photodiode. When the sensor is in very regular use over a long period of time, the optical element stops reflecting IR rays. This leads to system failures, for example, the windscreen wipers are activated when there is no precipitation.
Connector contact oxidation. This could be caused by high humidity inside the passenger compartment of the vehicle. This can cause the mechanism to function erratically or not to work at all.
