Subaru Vivio compact cars were made from 1992 to 1998. Assembling of these cars was performed in Japan. Modifications equipped with powerful engines, were repeatedly used in motorsports. Particularly, the car participated in KCB Safari Rally in 1993.
History of Subaru Vivio cars
The manufacturer created one generation. Initially, there were only 3- and 5-door hatchbacks Vivio, however, since 1994, T-Top targa versions were available to special order.
Bistro modification, which became very popular, was presented in 1995. Retro style elements were obvious in appearance of this car. For instance, the round headlights were instantly noticeable. The manufacturer used vintage chromed elements for trimming of the front part of these Subaru Vivio hatchbacks. The passenger compartment, including the dashboard, was also performed in retro style.
Due to changes in Japanese tax regulations, production of these cars ended in 1998. Pleo car became their successor.
Features of first generation Subaru Vivio cars
Length of the car was 3298 mm, width – 1409 mm, height – 1380 mm. Maximum volume of the luggage compartment reached 835 liters. Roundish contours of the headlights added more elegance to the car. The radiator grille was made as a narrow line, and small extended turn indicators were mounted near the trapezoidal front bumper grille. RX-R modification with high-powered engine could be recognized by a roof spoiler, bonnet air-inlet, and split bumper grille. As standard, all Subaru Vivio were equipped with wishbones in the front suspension, disc brakes on the front axle, and hydraulic power steering.
In 1992 the car participated in Paris–Beijing Rally. In spite of all concerns of car enthusiasts, the model withstood more than a week on a track and finished without serious breakdowns. Three sportive modifications of the car took part in Safari Rally 1993. One of them was driven by a remarkable racer Colin McRae and finished 12th.
