The sports coupe Porsche 928 was produced from 1977 until 1995 in Stuttgart, Germany. In 1978 it was given the title of the European Car of the Year. This prize is annually awarded by a jury consisting of journalists from different countries.
The background of Porsche 928
The coupe was represented by one generation and was a successor of the 911 model. It was introduced at the Geneva Motor Show in 1977. The sports car had pop-up headlamps, aluminium doors, fenders and bonnet. In 1980, the engine was upgraded. Its compression ratio was increased, which allowed to significantly reduce fuel consumption.
The S model was produced from 1980 until 1986. It was characterised by a better air drag coefficient. The maker succeeded in achieving it by using a sports aerodynamic kit including a rear spoiler. The car was equipped with an air conditioner, ABS, heated windscreen washer jets. Side mirrors and seats were electrically adjustable.
Starting from 1986, the manufacturer installed an upgraded exhaust system which made it possible to reduce the level of noise. Front brake calipers had four pistons. The cars sold on the German market were equipped with a catalytic converter which reduced the amount of harmful emissions to the environment.
In 1987-1991, the 928 S4 model was produced; it was characterised by a reduced air drag coefficient. It was 0.34. This figure was quite low for that time and was achieved by changing the design of the headlamps and using an aerodynamic kit. In 1988 they started to equip this sports car with cruise control, onboard computer, electronic tyre pressure monitoring system. The limited slip differential (PSD) introduced in 1990 had a positive effect on the stability of the sports car. At the same period, it was fitted with two exhaust pipes.
In 1989, the GT version was launched, which was produced until 1991. It was equipped with adjustable shock absorbers. There were two adjustments available: sport and comfort. In 1992, the company introduced the GTS, and this car replaced the S4 and GT versions.
The features of the Porsche 928 GTS
The GTS coupe was produced from 1992 until 1995 and had an improved multi-link suspension. Among distinctive features of the car exterior are: a body-coloured spoiler as well as rear lights which visually form a single unit. For the first time, the engineers used a front engine layout. The GTS cars were equipped with a power sunroof as well as with emergency brake assist, electronic stability programme, automatic ground clearance adjustment system.
