The SsangYong Rexton SUV has been produced from 2001 until present. Today, its assembly is carried out in South Korea and India. The cars of the first generation also went off the assembly line in Malaysia, Russia, Sri Lanka. In 2017, the model won the award "Best Ergonomic Design" from the Ergonomics Society of Korea. A pickup version of this vehicle, known in other countries as Musso, is sold in the South Korean market.
The history of SsangYong Rexton
The model has two generations and two facelifts. The design company established by the famous Italian designer Giorgetto Giugiaro created the exterior of the first generation, the Y200. These cars had a trapezoidal grille, a stylishly sculpted bonnet, rectangular headlights, and a roof-rack. The door handles and wing mirror housings were colour-coded. The manufacturer used the Torque On Demand technology which provides automatic torque distribution between the axles of the vehicle depending on the characteristics of the road surface. All cars were equipped with heated exterior mirrors and air conditioning as standard.
The SUV was facelifted for the first time in 2006 and was designated Y250. The outlines of headlights became smoother. Between them, there was a wide air intake, divided in two with a vertical bar. The car also acquired an improved parking brake, tire pressure monitoring system and collision warning assistant. Electronic stability programme was available as an optional extra.
The next facelift took place in 2012: the updated cars were marked with the letter W. Among the exterior changes, most notable was the new radiator grille: wide in the centre, it narrowed to the sides. From 2017 until the present, the Y400 generation has been manufactured.
The features of SsangYong Rexton (the Y400)
The renewed Y400 SUVs were unveiled at the International Motor Show in Frankfurt am Main in 2017. As for the exterior, now the upper part of the hexagonal grille is decorated with a massive chrome element. It partly frames the front lights which are integrated with LED daytime running lights.
The car is equipped with part-time all-wheel drive and nine airbags. Four video cameras provide a good view of the area around the car and help to park. Depending on the trim level, the list of equipment may include heated front seats, a seven-inch screen of the onboard computer, active rollover protection, hill start assist.
