Manufacturing of VW Passat, one of the most popular Volkswagen models, started in 1973 and continues nowadays. At various times cars were assembled at factories in Germany, Brazil, Australia, Mexico, Spain, Japan, China, Ukraine, Slovakia, Russia. The car was sold around the world under various names: Dasher – in the USA, Santana, Quantum – in Brazil, Magotan – in China, Corsar – in Mexico, Carat – in Argentina. The famous Australian “Wheels” magazine proclaimed the model “The Car of the Year” in 1974. In 1998 the car got the “Best Family Car” title according to the well-known “What Car?” magazine, and a year later the model received the same title from British Consumers’ Association “Which?”. The car took “European Car of the Year” award in 2015.
History of Volkswagen Passat cars
The car is presented by eight generations and three restyled versions. The first generation, B1, was produced in five body versions: station wagon, 3- and 5-door hatchbacks, 2- and 4-door fastbacks. Cars were built on the same platform as Audi 80. At first, there were only two SOHC power units with 1.3 and 1.5 liters displacement in the line of available engines. Exterior and interior of the car were designed by one of the most famous XX century designers – Giorgetto Giugiaro.
In the B2 generation the manufacturer offered the car in sedan and coupe versions instead of fastbacks. The hatchbacks got single rectangular headlights instead of double round ones. 5-cylinder 136 hp power units were added to the available engines list. B3 generation Volkswagen Passat cars, produced since 1988 in sedan and station wagon versions were the company’s first equipped with tinted front and rear glasses. The distinctive feature of this generation was absence of a radiator grille. Moreover, the manufacturer then used front headlamp clusters.
B4 generation, which was produced since 1993 got original radiator grilles. Front and side airbags for a driver and passengers, as well as safety belt pretensioners were installed in these cars in basic configuration.
Bodies of B5 generation Volkswagen Passatstation wagon and sedanwere fully zinc-coated. The manufacturer provided warranty against perforation corrosion for 11 years. B6 cars, produced since 2005 were the first in the world to be equipped with SAP system (SIM Access Profile) for remote connection between car GSM-unit and smartphone SIM-card. R36 modification with 300 hp engine was presented in this generation.
In the seventh generation, apart from the traditional sedan and station wagon, there was an Alltrack all-wheel drive modification with automated manual gearbox and road clearance increased by 30 mm. These cars were equipped with driver fatigue sensor, electronic parking brake with “Auto Hold” function and speed limiter.
Features of Volkswagen B8 Passat
Debut of B8 generation took place on Paris Motor Show in 2014. The car is available in sedan and station wagon versions. Minimalistic design dominated by clear straight lines was distinctive for the cars. The wide chromed radiator grille set in line with the headlights and narrow silvery molding around the whole body perimeter underline austere design of the model.
The car became shorter than its predecessor by 2 mm and lower by 14 mm. With that, body width increased by 12 mm. Passat sedan got the complete third seat and spacious luggage compartment of volume up to 1152 liters.
In richer equipment packages the ergoComfort driver’s seat is installed as standard; it has 14 modes of adjustment. The additional options list includes: system of automatic high beam control (Dynamic Light Assist), three-zone climate control (Air Climatronic), adaptive cruise control, traffic situation monitoring assistants with emergency braking function and other. Trailer Assist technology, which allows to control trailer deviation from the set movement trajectory became available for these cars for the first time in the company history.
