Production of Volkswagen Polo started in 1975 and continues till now. In different periods assembling was performed in Germany, Spain, Brazil, South Africa, China, India, Russia. In 1995 the model became the car of the year according to “What Car?” magazine. It was proclaimed the best in its class by the “Auto Express” magazine in 1997, and in 1998 it got the same award from the “Top Gear” magazine. Twins of this model are: Audi 50, Volkswagen Derby, Skoda Rapid, Volkswagen Vento, Seat Cordoba, Seat Ibiza.
History of Volkswagen Polo cars
At this moment, six generations of the model were released, and five of them underwent restyling. The first generation was produced from 1975 till 1979 in sedan and hatchback versions. A “sportive” name of this compact car should have evoked associations with Volkswagen Golf. A 3-door station wagon was added to sedan and hatchback in the second generation.
The third generation was produced from 1994 to 2001. Silhouettes of the Volkswagen cars became more streamlined in comparison with the second generation, restyled in 1990. Moreover, 5-door station wagons and hatchbacks appeared.
The fourth generation cars, produced since 2001 had bigger dimensions than restyled third generation ones. For instance, length of the new 5-door hatchback was 3897 mm, width – 1650 mm and height – 1465 mm, which is bigger than the predecessor with the same body style by 152, 20 and 45 mm respectively. The wheelbase became 55 mm longer, which allowed to give more legroom for rear seat row passengers.
The fifth generation, presented in 2009, got more dynamic outline and top of the line technical equipment, such as navigation system, touch display, automated dual-clutch 7-speed manual transmission (DSG). This car got “European Car of the Year” and “World Car of the Year” titles in 2010. And the sixth generation of the model was launched in 2017.
Features of MKVI Volkswagen Polo
A new 5-door hatchback debuted on the 16th of June 2017 in Berlin. Appearance of the new VW Polo became more sportive, particularly, due to narrowed headlights, radiator and bumper grilles. Mounting location of the fog lights looks more stylish: now they are not connected to the bumper grille. Distinctive decorative reinforcement ribs are located along the whole body. The rear part of the car also got distinct relief and the rear lights became more elongated.
The Active Info display can be mounted on the dashboard of the new Volkswagen Polo hatchback. A driver can set it to display data they need at a particular moment, as, for example, navigation maps, information about various car systems, car movement, multimedia system operation. Another convenient and technological solution is the “Keyless Access” system: the car automatically recognizes the key at a distance up to 1,5 meters and unlocks. While for engine start you need only to press a special button.
The car is equipped with modern driver assist systems. Assistants for parking, blind spots control, driving lane changing, as well as cruise control, emergency braking system (Front Assist) and pedestrian recognition system are available according to the configuration. Also, airbags and driver’s fatigue recognition system are installed. Preventive safety system is optionally available. It automatically closes the windows and sunroof, and tensions front seatbelts in case of emergency situation risk appears.
