Production of Volkswagen Transporter cars has started in 1950 and continues now. Various car generations were assembled in Germany, Brazil, Australia, Argentina, Mexico and other countries. This model took the “International Van of the Year” award in 1992 and 2004. Jury consisting of reputable journalists annually confers this award to novelties of car industry.
History of Volkswagen Transporter
The model has six generations and five restyled versions. Manufacturing of these vehicles was initiated by a Dutch importer, Bernardus Marinus «Ben» Pon. During his visit to Volkswagen factory he had conceived the idea to create a new commercial vehicle for the Netherlands market. Ben Pon was the one who drawed the first sketch of a new vehicle. Car concept was created just in 3 months.
T1, the first generation of Volkswagen Transporter, was produced in versions of panel van, 3- and 5-door minibuses, 2- and 4-door pickups. In terms of technical equipment the cars were greatly similar to Volkswagen Beetle. For example, both models used a flat engine with 1.131 liters displacement and 25 hp of power.
The T2 generation, that replaced the T1 in 1967 got a more powerful engine, upgraded rear suspension and one-piece windshield. The sliding side door was installed in a standard configuration.
The T3 generation, was produced since 1979 and it differed from its predecessors in angular front part, smaller headlights and presence of a radiator grille. Moreover, the cars became more spacious due to increasing of length by 64 mm and width by 125 mm. With that body height was lowered by 10 mm.
In the fourth generation, apart from traditional body types, Transporter van with increased wheelbase and a flatbed truck became available. The cars became front-wheel driven and the engine then was mounted in the front. The cars got massive front part with enlarged bumper and rectangular headlights.
T5 came to replace the fourth generation in 2003. To the list of available body types a 4-seat cab chassis was added. And the place for the third occupant appeared in the van cabin.
Features of T6 Volkswagen Transporter cars
The T6 generation is produced since 2015 in versions of minibus, van, 2- or 4-door chassis cabs, 2- and 4-door flatbed trucks. The cars look more modern due to enlarged relief bumper grille, chromed line on the radiator grille and smaller fog lights of angular shape.
The manufacturer took care that passengers and a driver would feel totally comfortable during a trip. For example, a semi-automatic “Climatic” air-conditioner is installed in the basic configuration of VW Transporter minibus. Moreover, the driver seat is equipped with heating.
Optionally, all cars of this model can be equipped with a range of safety systems: driver fatigue monitoring system, cruise control with blind spot control function, parking aid with sound warning and a rear view camera, etc. The basic configuration includes hill start assist.
The minibus is quite practical. For example, all seat backs can be folded if necessary. Moreover, the seats are very light, that is why their position can be changed with one hand.
