What are perforated brake discs?
Perforated brake discs differ from the conventional ones by the presence of through-holes across the entire surface, which gives a number of advantages. The holes create additional edges, which increases the friction coefficient between the contacting surfaces and so improves the braking efficiency. These edges have also a scraping effect: they clean wear products off the surface of the brake pad. The holes also help to instantly remove the heat and gases generated when the pads are working, which reduces the response time of the system and contributes to a quicker cooling of the brake mechanisms. On the other hand, the perforation can reduce their strength, so they are usually installed on racing cars with reduced service intervals.
