Production of Kia Sportage cars started in 1994 and still continues. In different years assembling was performed in South Korea, Germany, Russia, China, Ecuador, Malaysia, Slovakia, Ukraine, Algeria. In 2013 the model got “People’s Wheels Award” in category “SUVs and Crossovers — City & Suburban” from financial service group “Standard Bank”. Moreover, in 2016 this car took “Red Dot Design Award” in “Car Design” category. The same year the model became the top-selling car of the brand. In China the car is known as Kia KX5.

History of Kia Sportage

The model is presented by four generations and two restyled versions. The first generation of Kia Sportage started in 1994 under JA index. Apart from 5-door SUVs, 3-door cars were also offered to customers. The last ones were also 5-seaters, but differed by the fact that the part of their roof structure was soft and demountable.

The cars had the following dimensions: length – 4340 mm, width – 1735 mm, height – 1650 mm. Modification “Grand” became available since 1996: it was 5 mm higher than the standard SUV at the same width, and 90 mm longer. The car of 1997 year was the world’s first production car with the driver’s knee protecting airbag.

JE/KM generation started in 2004. Since that time the model is available in crossover body version only, and the 3-door car with soft roof was no longer produced. Car dimensions increased in comparison with the standard SUV of the previous generation: length reached 4350 mm, width – 1800 mm, height – 1695 mm. The manufacturer integrated the audio-system USB and AUX sockets in new cars. The airbag with switch-off function then was available for the front passenger.

SL generation was presented in 2010. New Sportage crossover got the radiator grille of complicated shape, contained in trapezoidal frame with roundish lower part. This element was harmonically combined with the stylish almond-shaped headlights. Dual-zone climate control with air ionization function and heating of all seats were used in top configuration. Moreover, the equipment list included the stability control system, cruise control, assist systems for hill start and downhill descent. In addition, the integrated vehicle stability management was presupposed: it was able to automatically block wrong actions of the driver in a critical situation.

Features of Kia Sportage QL cars

The fourth generation, QL, was officially presented to public on International Motor Show in Frankfurt am Main in 2015. The source of inspiration for the designers was exterior of modern fighter aircrafts. Appearance of Kia Sportage crossover is more moderate, thanks to smooth lines of the renewed radiator grille. This element was moved lower the headlights and they got elegant bending. The brand logo was mounted above the radiator grille. The fog lights of complicated shape were replaced with neat roundish ones. 16-inch light alloy wheel rims and LED daytime running lights are included into basic configuration.

The manufacturer presupposed many systems, which increase car comfort level. For instance, the satellite navigation system with 8-inch touchscreen, audio-system JBL Premium with 8 speakers are offered additionally. While access to all information needed on the way is provided by Kia Connected Services.

Top configuration offers the bi-xenon headlights with adaptive lighting function, emergency brake and blind zones monitoring systems. Also, Smart Power Tailgate system for automatic opening of the luggage compartment is available.
